Astros Jeff Bagwell Featured on Hand-Painted Baseball Glove

Hall of Famer Bagwell Receives Glove Artwork

Sean-Kane-Astros-Jeff-Bagwell-Baseball-Glove-Art-Painting-1000x.jpg

I recently had the honor of being asked to create a one-of-a-kind painting as a special gift for 2017 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Jeff Bagwell.

One of Bagwell's close friends commissioned this painted glove, which was given to him this week to coincide with his induction festivities in Cooperstown.

Rawlings Mitt as Canvas for Bagwell Art

Sean-Kane-Jeff-Bagwell-Rawlings-Baseball-Glove-Mitt-1000x.jpg

The painting is on a new Rawlings first base mitt, the Pro JB5 model, named for Bagwell.

The glove was made expressly for this project and has his name stitched on it. (Somewhat reminiscent to the Ryan Howard glove painted for the Phillies last year.)

Bagwell Painted Glove Design

With a 15-year baseball career full of milestones, a big challenge was deciding how to best use the space on the mitt to organize all of the info necessary to convey Bagwell's MLB achievements.

Sean-Kane-Jeff-Bagwell-Hall-of-Fame-Astros-Painted-Glove-Art-5-1000x.jpg

Pouring over the graphic elements relating to Bagwell's time with the Astros from 1991 to 2005, I decided the star element and his uniform number 5 -- along with his iconic batting stance that the client requested -- would be the key anchors of the design.

Sean-Kane-Jeff-Bagwell-Hall-of-Fame-Baseball-Glove-Painting-In-Progress-1000w.jpg

The Astros color palette of burgundy and black towards the end of Bagwell's career seems to best compliment the glove's black and tan appearance.

Bagwell Batting Portrait

Since the person being depicted is also the recipient of this painting, getting Bagwell's likeness as close as possible was key and the biggest challenge.

(The fabric held in place by masking tape covers areas of the glove I've already painted, keeping those parts protected from sweaty hands and fingers that might (probably!) have paint on them.)

Sean-Kane-Astros-Jeff-Bagwell-Baseball-Glove-Art-Painting-In-Progress-1000w.jpg

Even though the portrait is only about the size of my thumb, there's no mistaking which "Killer B" is up to bat.

Sean-Kane-Jeff-Bagwell-Hall-of-Fame-Baseball-Glove-Painting-Portrait-Detail-1000x.jpg

The painting is created using acrylic paints and varnishes -- and many fine-tipped brushes.

Hand-Lettered Awards and Stats

The glove is hand-lettered with highlights of Bagwell's many awards, including 1991 NL Rookie of the Year, 1994 National League MVP, 4-time All-Star, Gold Glove winner, and 1994 Player of the Year Award.

I used the Astros uniform font as the basis for my hand-lettered type with some artistic license, including italicizing/tilting it a bit.

A few career statistics totals are listed on the thumb side of the glove: Batting average .297, Hits 2,314, Home Runs 449, RBI 1,529 and Fielding .993 .

Sean-Kane-Astros-Jeff-Bagwell-5-Painted-Baseball-Glove-Art-Career-Stats-1000w.jpg

Recognizing Bagwell's close relationship with Darryl Kile, the client requested that the design include a reference to the "DK 57" memorial patch that was worn on uniforms upon Kile's death in 2002.

Design Details on Bagwell Baseball Glove Art

While not a member of the Astros during the prime 'Tequila Sunrise' uniform days (more about this at Uni-watch.com -- external link), the iconic red/orange/yellow rainbow is so linked to the visual identity of the Houston franchise, I wanted to be sure to reference it on the painting -- especially as Bagwell played his entire career with the team.

Bagwell is synonymous with wearing number 5 in Houston and the Astros retired his number in 2007. Taking design cues from the glove's design, the web lends itself ideally as placement for a number 5.

Sean-Kane-Astros-Jeff-Bagwell-5-Painted-Baseball-Glove-Art-detail-1000x.jpg

A reference to the Astros 2005 NL Championship and Bagwell's appearance in the World Series is placed in the webbing as well.

Lastly, once painted and a light matte finish is applied to protect the work, the first base mitt is displayed on a museum stand.

Hopefully this artwork will be a cherished keepsake enjoyed by Jeff and his family for many years to come!

Lou Gehrig Baseball Glove Painting

sean-kane-lou-gehrig-baseball-glove-sports-art-portrait-1.jpg

"The Iron Horse" Featured on a Vintage First Base Mitt

The Pride of the Yankees, Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig is portrayed on this vintage baseball glove painted by artist Sean Kane.

  • Original acrylic painting on late 1920s-early '30s baseball glove
  • First base mitt is approximately 7.5 inches x 8.5 inches
  • Displayed in leather-wrapped wood frame, outside dimensions 12 x 13 inches
  • Hand-painted portrait and lettering highlighting Gehrig's career

This painting has been sold.

Yankees Great Lou Gehrig

sean-kane-lou-gehrig-yankees-baseball-glove-sports-art-frame-1.jpg

Gehrig is celebrated with this hand-painted depiction on a mitt from the era in which he helped the Bronx Bombers win six World Series championships.

sean-kane-lou-gehrig-baseball-glove-sports-art-portrait-2130-consecutive-games.jpg

The Iron Horse's 2130 consecutive games streak is noted as are his 1927 and 1936 MVP seasons.

Gehrig helped lead the Yankees to World Championships in 1927, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1937 and 1938, which is hand-lettered on the ribbon under his name.

sean-kane-lou-gehrig-baseball-glove-sports-art-buckle-back-mitt.jpg

The buckle-back, paneled mitt is for a left-handed thrower, like Gehrig.

The mitt is from the late '20s - early '30s era.

Pictured below is Gehrig's 1928 R315 baseball card showing him wearing a glove similar in style to the one used for this painting.

Gehrig-1928-R315-card-glove-example.jpg

The inspirational Gehrig played for the Yankees from 1923 until 1939, when he was forced to retire at age 36 due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), now commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

sean-kane-lou-gehrig-yankees-baseball-glove-art-portrait-1.jpg

Gehrig was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939 after a career that included 493 home runs, 1995 RBIs, and a career .340 batting average.  And his fielding percentage at first base was .991, all the more reason to depict him on a mitt!

sean-kane-lou-gehrig-yankees-baseball-glove-sports-art-frame-2.jpg

The frame is made in Italy, angus waxed-leather finish in dutch black. The glove is wire-mounted with a cloth mat. Handsome and classic, ideally complimenting the glove artwork.

sean-kane-lou-gehrig-yankees-baseball-glove-sports-art-frame-detail-1.jpg

Ideal centerpiece for an office or man-cave centerpiece, this baseball keepsake is sure to be a conversation-starter.

Milwaukee Brewers 1987 Team Streak Glove Painting

sean-kane-brewers-1987-team-streak-baseball-glove-art-1.jpg

30th Anniversary '87 Team Celebrated on Art at Brewers Fantasy Camp 2017

The latest Brewers Fantasy Camp featured art I created which focused on the legendary 1987 Milwaukee Brewers, who began their season with a 13-game winning streak.

sean-kane-brewers-1987-team-streak-baseball-glove-art-2.jpg

"Team Streak", as they became known, is probably one of my most ambitious glove art paintings so far.

Incorporated in the design are five players key to the excitement of the 1987 Brewers:

Paul Molitor had a 39-game hit streak that season and is depicted coming out of the batters box after his hit in the last game of his streak.

Juan Nieves is depicted throwing the Brewers first no-hitter, a game caught by Bill Schroeder.

sean-kane-brewers-1987-team-streak-baseball-glove-art-3.jpg

Teddy Higuera threw 32 consecutive scoreless innings in 1987.

Dale Sveum had the game winning home run on Easter Sunday, keeping the Brewers winning streak alive.

And Rob Deer led the way on the Sports Illustrated cover story about the hot Milwaukee team. The image of him on the cover of SI was the basis for my portrait of him.

sean-kane-brewers-1987-team-streak-baseball-glove-art-4.jpg

Being a painting about a team, it seemed natural that the whole team should be represented. All player names from the '87 Brewers roster plus manager Tom Trebelhorn are included in the design.

sean-kane-brewers-1987-team-streak-juan-nieves-no-hitter-baseball-glove-art-1.jpg

The catcher's mitt is a pro model 1980s Rawlings, matching the era of the team depicted. While not the exact style used by Bill Schroeder the night he caught the Nieves no-hitter, the mitt did make for an ideal canvas for this painting

sean-kane-brewers-1987-team-streak-baseball-glove-art-5.jpg

This glove art was part of the fundraising efforts of Brewers Fantasy Camp. The raffle for the "Team Streak" art raised money for Stars and Stripes Honor Flight of Wisconsin.

The winner of the framed painted glove was Fantasy Camper Scott F., who says he already knows exactly where it's going to hang in his home.

Baseball Glove Art Featuring Bob Uecker

Bob Uecker Baseball Glove Painting on Vintage Catchers Mitt

Framed One-of-a-kind artwork by Sean Kane

THIS ARTWORK HAS SOLD

Like to know more? Contact Me.

“Mr. Baseball” featured on one-of-a-kind Baseball Art

Bob Uecker is probably best known for his roles as radio announcer for the Milwaukee Brewers and as a comedic actor.

From 1962 to 1967, Uecker was a catcher for the Milwaukee Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves.

He was part of the 1964 St. Louis Cardinals World Championship team.

Bob Uecker was inducted into the broadcaster wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003.

Uecker starred in the popular "Major League" movies as the announcer Harry Doyle.

He appeared regularly in the sitcom "Mr. Belvedere". Uecker was also a frequent guest on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show".  Uecker is also known for his role in the popular Miller Lite commercials.

In a nod to Mr. Uecker's sense of humor, this depiction of him is based on one of his Topps baseball card photos. In the baseball card photo he is shown in a left-handed batting pose -- even though he was a right-handed batter. Classic Uke.

Given Bob Uecker's connection to Milwaukee -- being raised there, making his MLB debut with the Milwaukee Braves and long tenure as Brewers play-by-play announcer -- it seemed natural to portray him with a Milwaukee cap on in this detailed painted portrait.

The glove is a '60s era Rawlings HOH X professional model glove, approximately 11 inches wide by 10.5 inches tall.

Artwork Details

Baseball announcer, retired baseball player and comedic actor Bob Uecker is portrayed as a member of the Milwaukee Braves on this vintage baseball glove painted by artist Sean Kane.

The detailed painting of Murray depicts him in his iconic batting stance, hat under helmet, wearing number 33 for the Baltimore Orioles.

He was a pivotal member of the 1983 Orioles team that became World Series Champions. Murray also played for the Dodgers, Mets, Indians and Angels.

Intricate hand-lettering highlights awards and stats from Murray's career.

The 1977 American League Rookie of the Year, Eddie Murray was also an 8-time All-Star and 3-time Gold Glove winner.

Murray is a member of the 3000 hits/500 home run club, with 3255 hits and 504 HRs along with 1917 RBIs in his career.

The mitt is a Wilson A2800 Dual Hinge, Pro-Back model from the 1980s, about 11 inches by 10.5 inches.

It was a particularly difficult glove model to find, but worth the effort as it personally connects to Murray's time in the game.

Glove Art Features Don Larsen's Perfect Game in '56 World Series

60th Anniversary of Larsen's Gem Commemorated with Baseball Glove Painting

sean-kane-don-larsen-perfect-game-glove-art.jpg

On October 8, 1956, in Game 5 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium, Don Larsen threw a Perfect Game against the Brooklyn Dodgers, winning 2-0.

At the time, it was the first Perfect Game thrown in 34 years.

It has been immortalized by the famous image of Yogi Berra jumping into Larsen's arms in celebration after the game.

I've created my own take on the significant event using two gloves, Don Larsen and Yogi Berra signature models.

The artwork features details of Mickey Mantle's home run and outfield catch, Yankee Stadium, the scoreboard as it appeared for the last pitch and Larsen throwing the first pitch.

This painting is in the collection of The National Pastime Museum and was unveiled on October 7, 2016, on the eve of the 60th Anniversary of the Perfect Game.

More details and images to come.
