Oscar Charleston Featured on a Vintage First Base Mitt

Negro Leagues star, Hall of Famer Charleston is celebrated on this vintage baseball glove painted by artist Sean Kane.

  • Original acrylic painting is on late 1930s Spalding baseball mitt.

  • Hand-painted portrait and lettering highlighting Charleston’s career

  • Mitt from the era in which he played. Originally a power-hitting centerfielder, he later moved to first base.

  • The mitt is for a left-handed thrower, like Charleston.

Charleston played in the Negro Leagues, starting with his hometown Indianapolis ABC's (American Brewing Company) in 1915.

He played for the ABC’s in the first Negro National League games on May 2, 1920.

He played and managed the mighty Pittsburgh Crawfords in the 1930's and spent nine winter ball seasons in Cuba.

Charleston returned to Indianapolis in the early 1950s as manager of the Indianapolis Clowns.
